I'm reposting this from another thread, because it is an excellent question that should deserve a thread all to itself... This topic has made me curious as to what we want to do for people who are having problems. Okay, so we investigate and find or don't find soemthing. Do we ever offer a blessing or anything for the person having trouble? Just curious to know if we want to do something to try to solve the problem other than add evidence that there is something paranormal at hand.

So...now that the question has been asked, here is how I view our responsibilities to our clientele: When we investigate a private residence, all of this equipment we own is used in an attempt to gather evidence of what, if anything, is causing the disturbance. I feel there are two sides of the evidence-gathering: On the skeptical side, we make every attempt to explain the disturbance as natural - examples being "hotspots" of EMF that can cause people to feel strange, undercurrents of air that might make doors close and open when nobody is in the room...that kind of stuff. If we can't explain something as naturally occurring, then it can be classified as possibly supernatural activity. We try to use the evidence gathered to determine what type of haunting is occurring (intelligent, residual, and poltergeist), whether the activity is centered around a specific person or item in the house, and if the history of the investigatio site provides any clues as to why the phenomena is occurring. Using this evidence, we make the best conclusion as to what is making the haunting occur. If it is centered around a specific item, the owners might wish to remove that item from the premises and see if it helps. If there was some sort of historical event that might be causing it, there might be a way to resolve the unrest that is occurring. That is basically what we do for our clients...it's not like we have proton packs and ecto-traps like in GhostBusters - I wonder if I can find those on Ebay. What do the rest of you think?? Doug

Perhaps...you can find everything on eBay! I agree with you Doug. I think it's more of offering suggestions to the client based on our findings. I'm prone to teaching them to "take back" their house and smudging and cleansing. It's really up to the client.

I am in full agreement with all of the above. We can open the door and point in the right direction, but they have to walk through it. I don't mind giving suggestions of people, links, places where they can go to get assistance in this realm.
For the record, Ecto traps also make good door stops.

It depends on the family. Some people like to have a ghost around. They think of it as being part of the family.
If the family wants to get rid of the ghost, remember that ghost used to be living people. Tell the family to be forceful and tell the ghost to get out.
I don't think that we won't encounter anything demonic. That is very rare in most cases.
We also have to be careful when investigating. Sometimes old people or teenage girls can cause poltergeist occurrences. It is also to interview the people who live in the house. Before we investigate, we have to rule out all natural explanations.
And remember, be professional, and treat people with respect!

I see this as being able to satisfy both ends:
I am interested in ghost hunting and the paranormal for selfish reasons and am looking for answers.
I also am interested in the reality of being able to help people out with something that potentially could be causing them great strain and pain both emotionally and physically.
As long as everything is done professionally and scientifically and proper care is taken when explaining the evidence or lack there of.......that is how I envision helping our clients.

Thanks, y'all. I'm glad others are also of the mentaility that we should offer some options should we find things we can't explain away and the situation is effecting the client.

Colleen, Jen, Cece, and I were talking about this the other night and I like what Colleen said which was that when we do an investigation, we hopefully will provide evidence of unexplained activity even if the client knows there is activity, we get it on paper so to speak. The client can then use this to solicit help from whomever they feel comfortable with, say a priest or medium etc. They can also have the reassurance that they aren't crazy or hallucinating and can, as Jen said, take control of their home and evict anything/one who is unwanted. Also as Colleen said we benefit as we get new evidence to put in our files, therefore everyone wins. Incidently Colleen and I know plenty of Pagans that are capable of house blessing/evictions for clients who may be more comfortable with a non JudeoChristan method of dealing with the phenomenon. Although I suspect we will find many more people looking for more traditional/mainstream spiritual help and I think people in our group with those connections should really start cultivating them so if we do run into something that requires more than we can provide, we can immediately refer the client to them. I think we need to start constructing a help network for the group, with the technical and spiritual and psycological bases covered. Another meeting topic Caroline

All joking aside, I agree that we need to start networking to find our "supporting cast". Love them or hate them, the Paranormal State crew has an excellent set of resources for conducting investigations.
It would behoove us to make friends with electricians, priests, librarians, historians, shamans, demonologists, investigative psychics, psychologists, etc- who are open to what we do, I might add- to help us when we have our doubts about information, or to further assist a client where we cannot.
Our job really is to document and catalog; if someone wants to get rid of their "guest", we need to be prepared to show them who to get that help from.

I agree with you on this...we should probably talk about this at the next meeting. I would love to be part of this resource and research group (Anyone who knows me is probably not shocked right LOL).
